Imperial War Museum

Duxford

A new permanent exhibition for Imperial War Museum Duxford explores the former military airfield’s incredible history in wartime and peace time, courtesy of striking graphics from Philip Simpson, working in partnership with Met Studios inhouse design team. Graphics were interpreted on may levels including scene setting, moving image and hands on interactives. A unifying feel and identity was key including a level for the family audience and younger age group.

Accessibility and inclusivity were prioritized, for both graphics and innovative elements such as vibrating buttons and smells to represent airfield, canteen and aircraft hangars with audio directions for the visually impaired. Alicia Gurney, Exhibitions Manager for IWM Duxford says:

‘The team have worked hard to create an exhibition that meets the expectations of visitors to a national museum and the interests of our family audiences as well as doing justice to the fascinating history of the site and the stories of all those who lived and worked here.’
